Spirit of 1940s
Durham’s annual Nostalgia Day will bring the spirit of 1940s Britain into the heart of Durham on Bank Holiday Monday.
Visitors to the city centre will enjoy the sights and sounds of the Britain during the second world war with a living history tableau, live music, dancing, markets and more, with events and entertainment from 11am to 4pm in the Market Place and Walkergate.
In the Market Place, Yesterday’s Heroes will create a World War II Living History Tableau, giving people the opportunity to get up close with military vehicles and equipment from the time, and learn more about Britain during the war. There will also be Lindy Jazz dancing and entertainment from crooner Jay B.
The Market Place will also feature the ‘Heartbeat Bus’, which was built in the 1940s, restored by the Aycliffe & District Bus Preservation Society, and has since appeared in Heartbeat. A team from Beamish Museum will be with the bus. A Vintage and General Market can also be found in the Market Place, and the Market Hall will be open from 11am to 4pm with many of the traders in 1940s costumes too.
In Walkergate, visitors will enjoy the Echo 42 18 piece swing band, performing at both 12 noon and 2.15pm, a military vehicle display and Lindy Jazz performances.
Colin Wilkes, event organiser and Managing Director of Durham Markets, commented: “This is a popular event, and loved by all ages. The era holds a fascination for children and adults alike, and the day’s atmosphere is all the better because market traders and even visitors dress up to make the most of it. It’s a must for the Bank Holiday Monday.”
Events, markets, and entertainment will be running from 11am to 4pm in Durham Market Place, and Walkergate (outside the Gala Theatre). For further information, follow Durham Markets Events on Facebook.
Nostalgia Day is part of a weekend of events in Durham City Centre, following on from Sunday’s Uniformed Services Fun Day which will have events and entertainment in the Market Place, Walkergate and Prince Bishops, and at Elvet Riverside.
