Durham Markets Company Scoops New Retail Award

Durham Markets Company has been awarded Marketing/PR Initiative of the Year at the Durham Retail Awards 2010 in association with Littlewolf PR & Marketing, Durham University and Durham Cathedral.

The trophy, presented by The Durham Times, was given in recognition of the huge success of the Local Food Producers Market launched at the City of Durham Christmas Festival 2009, which aimed to promote and celebrate the rich variety of local fare produced right on the city’s doorstep.

The Market was designed to offer maximum support to local food producers at a very tricky economic time. Set in the Cathedral Cloisters, it represented the first ever official collaboration between the Cathedral and Market in over 1000 years. Stalls were laid out around the atmospheric Cloister walkways in a celebration of locally-produced food. Exhibitors included well-known figures from Durham's Indoor Market such as Akin's Family Bakers and the award-winning fishmonger IK Fish, as well as a large number of rural producers.

Thanks to a comprehensive PR & marketing campaign surrounding the event, the Local Producers Food Fair was a huge success, experiencing excellent levels of footfall and trade and being very well received by locals and visitors alike.

As a mark of its success, it will be returning to the Festival again this year, newly expanded across two days of the event and incorporating even more traders than before.
